What to Expect During Your Driveway Construction Project

Building a new driveway is a significant investment, and knowing what to expect makes the process smoother for everyone. At Zook Services, we've completed hundreds of driveway construction projects across the Graford, Mineral Wells, and Weatherford area. Here's exactly what happens from first call to finished driveway.

Step 1: Site Evaluation and Estimate

Everything starts with a visit to your property. We walk the proposed driveway route, assess soil conditions, evaluate drainage patterns, and discuss your needs and preferences. You'll receive a detailed written estimate that covers all aspects of the project with no hidden costs. This visit is always free and comes with no obligation.

During this visit, we'll also discuss material options, timeline expectations, and any site-specific challenges like steep grades, tree removal, or utility crossings.

Step 2: Site Preparation

Proper site preparation is where driveway quality is truly determined. This phase includes:

  • Clearing and grubbing — Removing vegetation, topsoil, and organic material from the driveway path
  • Grading — Shaping the subgrade to the proper profile with correct drainage slopes
  • Compaction — Mechanically compacting the subgrade to create a stable foundation
  • Drainage installation — Installing culverts, ditches, or other drainage features as needed

Step 3: Base Construction

The base layer is the structural backbone of your driveway. We install and compact crushed stone base material to the depth required for your soil conditions and expected traffic loads. This step cannot be rushed. Each lift of material is compacted separately and tested before the next is placed. A properly built base is why some driveways last twenty-five years while others fail in five.

Step 4: Surface Installation

With a solid base in place, we install your chosen surface material. For asphalt, hot-mix is delivered, spread to a uniform thickness, and compacted while hot. For chip seal, liquid asphalt is sprayed and aggregate is applied and rolled. The surface installation typically takes one day for most residential driveways, though larger projects may take longer.

Step 5: Finishing and Cleanup

We dress the shoulders, clean up the site, and walk the completed driveway with you. We'll explain any curing requirements and provide guidance on when you can begin normal use. For asphalt, you'll typically want to wait 24 to 48 hours before driving on it, though this varies with temperature.
